Under the global background of increasing prosperity of the iflm industry andmulti-dimensional development of the translation studies, the research on subtitlinghas become an inevitable development trend and has been favored by more and morefrom domestic and overseas scholars. Although a lot of translation and linguistictheories, methodologies and methods have been employed to enrich the subtitlingstudy, there is still much room for improvement. Based on this, the frame theoryconcerning about subtiti’ers mental mechanism is applied here to re-explain thesubtitling process and explore the subtitling strategies and methods in combinationwith the comparative study of three Chinese subtitled versions of Forrest Gump, which can not only meet the interdisciplinary requirement of the translation studies, but also further promote the prosperity of the iflm industry. As far as the frame theory is concerned, the subtitling process is viewed as theprocess of frame understanding and construction with frame correspondence as itsultimate goal. The task of subti tiers is to ifnd in the target language the linguisticexpressions which can activate the cognitive frames identical or similar to those in thesource language, during which a lot of decision-making activities are involved. Interms of the summarized strategies, frame transplantation, frame replacement, frame""paraphrase and frame adjustment are involved to seek harmonious translation.Furthermore, since the frame is a rather flexible concept, the comparative study iscarired out on three levels (lexical, syntactical and textual) with the expectation toprovide a more comprehensive explanation of the frame theory, among which thepersonal difference is well reflected.
