TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) is one of the outstanding cultural heritagesof Chinese nation. During thousands of ’years practices, TCM has developed into acomprehensive and unique medical system. With remarkable effective functions, lowprices and natural medical materials with low side effect. TCM has drawn worldwideattention. Internationalization of TCM has become a necessary trend and translation isa birdge to propagate TCM in the world.HLM {H"ong Lou M"eng) is called an encyclopedia of feudal China and includesa rich fund of medical knowledge which is unique in the history of literary in Chinaand abroad. This thesis attempts to analyze the TCM translation in two chosen Englishversions of HLM (Yang Xian and David Hawkes) from the perspective of Aesthetics ofReception. It is hoped that the present thesis may give some suggestions to TCMtranslation and to make some contributions to the further study on Aesthetics ofReception.The thesis consists of six chapters: Chapter One states the research significanceand methodology of the study. Chapter Two reviews translation of TCM andtranslation of HLM at home and abroad in chronological order. Chapter Threeintroduces TCM and TCM translation birefly, and analyzes the main diiffculties inTCM translation. Chapter Four elaborates the theory of Aesthetics of Reception and itsapplication in translation. Chapter Five introduces HLM and its two English versions(Yang Xianyi and David Hawkes), and analyzes the TCM translation in two chosenEnglish versions from the perspective of Aesthetics of Reception. Chapter Six makes abiref overview of this thesis, and then presents its findings and limitations. At last,some suggestions for the further research are provided.
