In post-industrial period, postmodernism performed a strong rise, especially in western countries, the aspect of culture theory held its social stage rapidly. With wide spreading, postmodernism culture and other culture theory naturally incorporated into a new cultural environment with particular style and brand new appearance. Its features consist of rebellion to traditional dialogue and macro narration, authority’s breakdown, departure of main idea, parody, collage, black humor and violence aesthetics. In these years, the tendency of globalization grows obviously, whose consequence is that each culture fight to survive with its original style in the competition and mix up into one at the same time. Whereafter, postmodernism was passed into China in that background, which raised a wave of time spirit. It attracted lots of focus among movie industry field. At first it found its place only in art film, with time flows, more directors choose to try this method. By now, Jiang Wen, a director with independent character, cast his interest onto postmodernism. For jiang wen, his special status of combination with a director and an actor, naturally draw much more attention. The screen performance he made with courage and uprightness give us extremely strong impression, almost in every movie he participated as an actor. But the works he directed are much less, we can make a simle list,In the Heat of the Sun,Devils on the Doorstep, The Sun Also Rises, Let the Bullets Fly.all these four are adapted from novels. Contrary to novels, Movie means direct demonstration to audience without any obstacle, and so the words are converted into images with heavy infection through technical methods. With this trend of postmodernism and mass culture’s mix, old rules break down gradually, soon afterwards a new concept is born. It is destructed in imitation, collaged in plurality, reborn in revolution. These four movies are influenced by Jiang Wen, for his independent participation. From initial analysis and reproducing, to photographing and editing in last period, all impressed by his life experience and inner vital sense. Reciting and interpretation, along with sketching human nature are always his style. Jiang Wen’s movie never tell story in old way but in his own eyesight. In his films, history rebuilds, irrelevant events mix into one story. Full of emotions and thoughts, his film always bring us surprise. Mass culture dissolve into his free style, while irrelevant events’mix and rebuild, images of violence, absurd and carnival, all are rooted in Jiang Wen’s work tradition, which represent postmodernism and spray strong emotions and feelings. In Jiang Wen’s movie, Culture Revolution, Anti-Japanese War. northern warlords all stand out with postmodernism for his wonderful adaptation. Including particular way of telling story, audio-visual language also has its own place, vivid color, unique music, are very romantic, which matches constantly with his own style. The first three are still in the range of art movie, but the fourth one, let the bullet fly, is added with some commercial points, which testify that postmodernism mixes with mass culture in this background. Another key point of pluralism is the combination of commercial film and individual eyesight, which also represent the balance and creative of Jiang Wen’s work under the skin.
