In June 31,1861, a great literary masterpiece was created in a little island in the Atlantic where Victor Hugo, who was living in exile abroad, finished his novel Les Miserables. This epical work has not only absorbed generations of readers, but also fired up many playwrights’dreams including Puccini and some other playwrights in the 19th century, who wanted to adapt it into musical. Their dreams were not realized until 1980 more than 100 hundred years later. In Britain, the musical has ran for 18 years on end in Britain, since its opening in the London’s West End in 1985, closing after over than 7000 performances. In America, it ran for 16 years on Broadway with an audience of over 25 million. It had 54 versions in production and 21 in different languages, witch can be found in 38 countries and 217 cities all over the world, including Shanghai, China. The show won the London Critics’Circle Theater Award for Best Musical in 1986 and won 8 Tony Awards in 1987, including Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a musical, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a musical, Best Scenic Design of a musical and Best Lighting Design of a musical.Its success was not a mere accident. People owed it to its gripping dramatic plot, simple and luminous melody, spectacular accompaniment, excellent second-timed creativity of actors and so on. This article focuses on the analysis of theatrical musical and departs the musical into two parts:vocal music and orchestra music. In the first part, based on the analysis of dramatics personae’s characters and combining several certain situations, the author selects 8 classic arias from the musical and interprets how to perform musical embodying opera. In the second part, the author analyses the theatrical function of instrumental music from three aspects:the theatrical function of instrumental intermezzo, the theatricalization of instrumental music during the performance of vocal music and the metaphorical theme of the instrumental music.
