Erich Fromm is a well-known American psychoanalyst and social sci entist of the twentieth century. He has presented many thought-provoking th eoretical views in his lifetime. In his most important writing Escape from F reedom, a famous opinion is given:the development of human society is a kind of escape from freedom, and this escape can be called abuse and ab used.He arrived at this view from the development of western civilization. In the slave society, slaves and slave owners relied on each other heavily, so that they could escape from the endless loneliness and fear which were brought by their inadequate freedom. Medieval people gave their freedom t o God in order to feel security and peace of mind. In modern society, how ever, the faith in God fades away, so people turn to money, power, fame a nd fortune to seek comfort and sense of dependence. The idea of abuse and abused is insightful, and can be effectively ap plied into the explanation about love between men and women, parents and children. In Fromm’s opinion, some love is not true love, but abuse and a bused in a sense. The view of abuse and abused has its own value, especially when it helps us analyze works of literature. This paper focuses on this view, endea voring to explain its connotation and interpreting effect while reviewing its signification and limitations.
