Absurdity is the disharmony between man and the world, and the contradiction betweenmen’s yearning for harmony, eternity and the indifferent respond of the world. In the newperiod accompanied by the influx of Western absurd thoughts and the creative practice ofmodern writers, the absurdity consciousness in literature has given rise to extensive researchof the critics, and has made certain achievements, but the research on the specificrepresentation of the absurdity consciousness in novels is still insufficient. I believe that theabsurdity consciousness is systematically present in the text structure in the novels in the newperiod. Combining the absurdity theories with novels in the new period, this dissertationintends to explore the expression of the absurdity consciousness and the creating reasons so asto provide a deeper, more systematic study, and an objective evaluation of absurdityconsciousness, and promote the further development of the novel in the new period. The fulltext is divided into three parts:The first chapter investigates the expression of the absurdity consciousness in theChinese novels in the new period. This chapter explains the constituent elements of fictions, and provides a comprehensive and systematic overview of the concrete manifestation of theabsurdity consciousness in the novels in the new period. The constituent elements of thenovels fall into two categories: first, the absurdity of the content of the fictions, including thedeformation of the characters, plot development irrationality and abnormal livingenvironment; second, the absurdity of the fiction forms, including the language of uncertaintyand structural disorder mosaic, language ambiguity and random stitching of fiction structureshowing the true colors of human existenceThe second chapter investigates the causes of absurdity consciousness in Chinese novelsin the new period. The causes of the absurdity consciousness in Chinese novels in the newperiod are multi-sided. This chapter tries to explain from four aspects. Fist is the influence ofwestern absurd trend on the creation of Chinese novels in the new period, from the translationof absurd writings and writers urgently accepting the trend. The second is the inherited absurdity consciousness in Chinese ancient literature: there is absurdity philosophy in theworks of Lao Tzu, Mencius. To be specific to the novels, the absurdity consciousness is bydescribing the absurd characters and stories to reflect the substandard matters in real life. Thesigns of the heritage of ancient absurdity concept in the new period are obvious, especially inbeginning of the new era. The third is writers’perception at a certain historical stage. Thecreation of the novels can not be separated from real life, and the writers’special experiencein the Cultural Revolution is the hotbed of absurdity consciousness in the novels in the newperiod. The fourth is the liberation of literary concepts, which is the premise of the existenceof the absurdity consciousness in the novels in the new period. With the end of the CulturalRevolution, Chinese literature and art policies have undergone a positive adjustment, whichpromotes the transformation of the literary concept of the novels in the new period. The third chapter gives my own understanding about the absurdity consciousness inChinese novels in the new period and tries to provide an objective evaluation of the absurdityconsciousness in Chinese novels in the new period. The positive side: the novels in the newperiod present the absurdity consciousness in the structure of the novels, and the absurdcontent provides a comprehensive coverage of alienation, emptiness and resistance, so as toenhance the philosophical core of the work; fiction texts also adopt absurd forms whichexpand the future path of development for literature in the new period. On the other hand, inthe novels in the new period, the absurdity consciousness has the following deficiencies: signsof imitation are obvious; writers are anxious but not grasping the core of the absurdproposition; self-direction estranged from the public; too much emphasis on the form of novelcounteracts the narration; creative style fails to show the positive significance of absurdity.
