Image And Text Studies Of Ceremony Culture In Folk Belief

Folk belief, as one of folk cultures, is widely available in Chinese villages and townsand it is closely related to people’s life there. It is displayed in many dynamic forms. Inthis article, the Buddhist scripture “Dajiao” from southern Hebei Province is chosen todisplay the dynamic value of folk belief. This thesis discusses the nature of the Buddhistscripture “Dajiao” by using culture space concept as scholarly reference and starting withthe exploration of village area belief space as a case. Based on this, the images of theBuddhist scripture “Dajiao” are selected as research objects to finally ascertain that partsof its pictures are similar to the nature of religious figure pictures, while some other partsnot. This conclusion is drawn from the discussion of the nature of pictures attached to theceremonies and belief behaviors. At the same time, the author classifies all the pictures invernal equinox Buddhist scripture “Dajiao” with reference to Buddhist rites and relateddocuments, and on the basis of this, the author describes and discusses its iconography andphotography.This thesis explores the relationship between culture image and its model in formsand styles: there are visible and invisible models in the culture environment and they allinfluence the painting style formation of the folk painters. By the discussion anddescription of the picture styles, the paper points out the pictures in the culture space are alittle different from the tradition and the reasons of this trend are discussed too. Finally theauthor reveals the real meaning and value of these pictures in belief culture. The authorbelieves these pictures are not decorations and cannot arouse people’s devotion. The realvalue of these pictures is that they are the essential part of the ceremony and the core is thetheme of the pictures.
