James Joyce, the Irish novelist and poet, is considered as one of themost important writers in the20thcentury. His works is a vivid as well asa true demonstration of the existential instances of modern people.Dubliners, although only a collection of15short stories, is seen as thethreshold of Joyce’s works in that he sets his attention on Dublin life forthe first time. What is more noteworthy is that this volume presents morefemale characters than any other work, in which these women aredepicted side by side with men. Although these Dublin Women aremarginalized and deprived of the right to speak, they gain their femalesubjectivity. To explore how the women are devoiced and how they areendowed the female subjectivity under beneath by the author; this thesiswill concentrate on the analysis of female character from the perspectiveof feminism and endeavour to complete Joyce studies in that area.According to Simone de Beavoir’s theory of the Other, women are defined as the Other and reduced to the second sex. However, womencould use the potential force of the Other to construct their femalesubjectivity. The thesis employs the feministic classical theory of theOther to disclose how women in Dubliners precede from being neglectedto constructing their female subjectivity successfully. Through the closereading of Dubliners, the thesis exposes how women are victimized in apatriarchal society and reveal how the traditional notion of gender andpatriarchal order are challenged through women’s hidden femalesubjectivity.
