This research paper, based on Hyland’s interpersonal model of metadiscourse,explores the subtitling of on-line open courses with reference to Justice: what’s theright thing to do. With the assistance of UAM Corpus Tool, Quantitative study isconducted to summarize the deployment of metadiscourse in the source text and twotarget text versions from the translation groups of YYeTs and COPSY. Qualitativeanalysis deals with the rhetorical functions and the degree of metadiscoursecorrespondence between the source text and the two target texts as well as the possiblereasons for divergence. Finally, four appropriate subtitling strategies are proposed toreproduce the rhetorical functions of metadiscourse, so as to optimize the learning andappreciating experience for the Chinese audience.
