Research On The Design And Application Of Calligraphy Fonts In The Subway Navigation System

This thesis is based on its research on the calligraphic fonts used in the Xi’an Subway Line2to explore the standards for design and application in the subway navigation system. The thesis combs through status quo of font design in navigation system of public transportation as well as the relevant standards in China and other countries. The analysis is developed from the calligraphic development history, cultural connotations, and requirements on navigation fonts design to semiotics theories. By integrating the geographical and cultural features of Xi’an City with the feasibility of calligraphic fonts in subway navigation, the thesis finally leads to some detailed design methods and application standards that are concluded from many practices and programs. After the subway comes into services, evaluation is carried out on the calligraphic fonts through interview method, questionnaires, feasibility test and evaluation method. By virtue of the complete process of theoretical research and design, a conclusion about the innovation, future perspective and problems is reached.This thesis makes the research on calligraphic fonts design by introducing their design into the public transportation navigation system and proving it theoretically and practically possible to blend locally distinctive calligraphic fonts into the subway navigation system. Besides performing its functions, the calligraphic fonts relate to the geography and culture and enrich the cultural connotations of the subway navigation system because they are not only the signs delivering messages of the transportation, the local cultures and passengers’aesthetic needs, but also an important window to opening up to the outside world.
