This thesis attempts to explore the cultural discrimination in A Passage to India fromPost-colonial perspective. The cultural discrimination is explored from three aspects.Represented by symbols, in A Passage to India, the blurry and ambiguity of Indian cultureform the discriminative atmosphere of the whole novel; and then the marginalized identityof the Indian natives are discussed since the cultural discrimination is fully represented inits loss of unique cultural identity in the colonial context; In addition, representing Indianculture, Indian religion is obscure and thus poses great threat to the colonizers. Theobscurity of Indian religion is therefore explored to see how it threatens Western culturewhich seeks ways to suppress and erase it in A Passage to India. This thesis comes to itsconclusion that, in A Passage to India, Indian and Indian culture have been misunderstoodand distorted under the pressure of colonialism and racial discrimination, and the culturaldiscrimination has profoundly destroyed the life of the native Indians. Moreover, the realfriendship between the Indians and the English can only be truly developed after thecolonialism is eradicated thoroughly.
