The Industrial Cooperative Agency’s English version is “Gongho”, whichmeans solidarity, cooperation, bravery as well as pioneering. Its short form is“Gonghe” in Chinese. Faced with the invasion of Japan, Chinese IndustrialCooperative Campaign, whose short form is “Gonghe” Campaign, is an economicsalvation movement launched in areas ruled by Kuomingtang as well as anti-Japanesebases led by Chinese Communist Party with the help and support of Louis Alley,Edgar Snow and his wife Nimes Wells. It has spread over eighteen provinces in China.Yunnan is located in the southwestern border of China, which leads to its economicbackwardness and weak industrial basis. Chinese Industrial Cooperative Associationfounded “Gonghe” Agency of Yunnan province in the February of1939, whichprovided beneficial conditions for the development of handicraft industry in Yunnan.By the end of April,1943, there have been seven agencies respectively in Dali,Lijiang, Yuxi, Qujing, Baoshan, Zhaotong and Guiyang. The agency in Lijiang wasset up in the May of1942, whose director is Peter Goullart. From1942to the July of1949, especially after1945, the Industrial Cooperative Agency in Lijiang hasdeveloped prosperously while “Gonghe” Agencies in other parts of China were inrecession. The Industrial Cooperative Agencies not only meet the daily needs ofLijiang people, promote the development of handicraft industry in Lijiang, but alsocontribute greatly to anti-Japanese war by providing goods and materials for the armyin the front line.This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter One introduces the foundation anddevelopment of “Gonghe” Agencies both in China and Yunnan province during theanti-Japanese war period.Chapter Two is about the practice and its characteristics ofLijiang Industrial Cooperative Agency directed by Peter Goullart. Chapter Threeattempts to figure out the reasons as well as significance of success of LijiangIndustrial Cooperative Agency directed by Peter Goullart. Chapter Four analyzes theinfluence of Lijiang Industrial Cooperative Agency.
