Based on the established corpus, studies on the academic writings are the focus ofmany scholars. They take a macro analysis on the systematic grammar and a macro oneon genre research. This research selected fifty copies of the conclusion section inpublished engineering articles as the research articles. Based on Allison&Yang’s (2003)move structures, and Halliday’s (2000) thematic progression, this study carried out amacro and micro survey on textual analysis. This study tried to find how the thematicprogression patterns and the nature of theme are organized in each move of theconc;lusion part.The results show that:First, as the inner structure of a sentence, the use of simple and unmarked themewas62.5%and59.1%respectively. The writers were inclined to choose simple andunmarked theme. Since the collected conclusions are in the field of EAP, the applicationof these themes can facilitate the reading and save the readers’ time. At the same time,the application of marked theme (37.5%) and multiple theme (40.9%) can enrich thestructures of texts and diversification.Second, move analysis studied the arrangement of the conclusion section. Based onthe move structure, the thematic progression patterns can gather the model of sentenceswithin one level of move. The study shows that the three moves followed the same rolein choosing thematic patterns, that is, the constant theme pattern (35%), the linearthematic pattern (18%) and the constant rheme pattern (29%) were widely used in thesemoves. These patterns were commonly applied since their functions in paralleling,linking and corresponding.Last, this study proposed to apply the findings to the pedagogical procedure. Inother words, the scholars and the students were received the notion of genre analysis,theme theory and thematic progression patterns, paid attention to the structures existedin the articles, then employed them in their own articles. Meanwhile, this research canfacilitated the academic writing, encouraged the learners get more internationalscientific knowledge.This study still has some limitations. The expansion of the quantity and scale ofacademic papers; the addition of co-researchers to avoid subjectivity in findings; furtheranalysis of the model of teaching practice and its application, etc. were the follow works needed to pay attention to. Through the integration of more than two theories and theestablishment of the research model, this study developed from a new perspective. Itcan help the learners to master more professional academic writing structures. |
