Objective: To compare the effects of proximal femoral nail anti-rotation Ⅱ(PFNA-Ⅱ) versus third generation of Gamma nail (TGN) in treatment of femoral intertrochantericfractures. Methods:Between January2008and September2011,242patients with femoralintertrochanteric fractures were treated with PFNA-Ⅱ(114patients) or TGN (128patients).The difference between the2groups was not significant in preoperative evaluation andcomparability existed. The clinic data of surgical trauma, postoperative function andcomplications of the2groups were statistically compared in this study. Results: Operative time: PFNA-Ⅱgroup(57.9±20.2)min,TGN group(75.0±24.7)min(p<0.05); fluoroscopy frequency:PFNA-Ⅱgroup(19.7±2.3),TGN group(21.1±2.6)(p<0.05);intra-operative active blood loss:PFNA-Ⅱgroup(146.1±112.7)ml,TGN group(185.7±137.6)ml(p<0.05);length of incision:PFNA-Ⅱgroup(7.3±2.1)cm,TGN group(6.6±2.1)cm(p>0.05);fracture union time:PFNA-Ⅱgroup(11.7±2.8)week,TGN group(12.5±2.3)week(p>0.05);Harris hip score:PFNA-Ⅱgroup(84.7±14.8),TGN group(82.5±15.2)(p>0.05). Moreover, this study suggested thatnone of the2groups suffered cut out, failure of internal fixation, nonunion and otherpostoperative complications. Conclusions: Compared with TGN, PFNA-Ⅱ displayed superiority in the operativetime, fluoroscopy frequency, intra-operative active blood loss, but no advantages infunctional outcomes, intra-operative and postoperative complications.
