| Objective:Idiopathic short stature (ISS) is a common disease which has an increasing proportion in the short stature of the school-aged children in recent years. The cause of the disease is not yet clear, and therefore there is no good therapy for it. Although traditional treatments such as growth hormone therapy have certain effects, however, the effects are limited because of high price, side-effects of growth hormone or insensitivity to it. According to traditional Chinese medicine, ISS is caused by asthenia of the spleen, asthenia of the kidney, or asthenia of both the spleen and kidney. This study aims to investigate the curative effect of Chinese medical herbs for invigorating spleen and kidney combining with comprehensive intervention such as nutrition, exercise, massage, training on equipment on ISS, and to seek for a safe, effective and convenient treatment for the ISS.Methods:95cases of children with ISS in growth and development outpatient department from January2012to December2012were randomly divided into two groups. Children in group1were treated with Chinese medical herbs for invigorating spleen and kidney combining with comprehensive intervention such as nutrition, exercise, massage, training on equipment; and those in group2were treated with recombinant human growth hormone. The courses of both groups are12months. The body height, body weight and bone ages of children in both groups were checked before treatment,6months after treatment and12months after treatment respectively; Annual change of bone age were calculated.Results:After6months of treatment, the body heights of children in the two groups have no significant difference (125.3±7.2cm vs126.7±7.2cm, P>0.05); and the difference is not statistically significant neither after12months of treatment (130.1±7.1cm vs130.3±6.8cm, P>0.05). The amount of height increase in group1is lower than that in group2in the former6months but higher in the later6months, the differences are statistically significant (all P<0.05); there are no significant differences in annual height changes and bone age changes between the two groups; but weight gain in group1is larger than that in group2(P<0.05).Conclusion:Chinese medical herbs for invigorating spleen and kidney combining with comprehensive intervention has significant effects on ISS which has a relative low price, being convenient for children and their parents, and no obvious adverse reactions. So it is worth promoting broadly in treating ISS. |
