ObjectiveTo assess the function of the Vertical semicircular canal (VSCC) in patientswith Meniere’s disease(MD) and to analysis the relationship of the function ofthe VSCC and HSCC in patients with MD.MethodsA prospective analysis of66patients presenting with MD and45normolsubjects who were examined the VSCC function using180-degree vertical planenon-damping swing method with the developed automatic benign paroxysmalpositional vertigo (BPPV) diagnosis and therapy system (SRM-Ⅳ). We recordedthe course including the eye nystagmus orientation and the slow phase velocity(SPV) and other parameters with computer and video. The vertical planeswing test was done in all subjects, calculating the average slow phase velocityof the vertical nystagmus and the canal paresis (CP) of the the right anteriorsemicircular canal(SCC)-left posterior SCC plane(RALP) as well as the leftanterior SCC-right posterior SCC plane(LARP).PC and SPSS17.0softwarewere used for statistical analysis. At the same time, all patients were examinedthe HSCC function with caloric test.We screening the abnomal patients andanalysis the function of VSCC with them.ResultsVertical nystagmus could be induced in128of132(96.97%) pairs in66MDpatients while the CP range of the two pairs of VSCCs was0.13%-89.00%.39 patients with MD had at least one pair of VSCCs CP≥20%.The average slowphase velocity(ASPV) of nomal subjects was larger than that of patients withMD,there was statistically significant difference in the either LARP or RALPplane.46patients showed abnomal canal paresis(CP) in caloric test and inwhich there were33patients with abnomal fuction of VSCC. CP of180-degree vertical plane non-damping swing were consistent with caloric testin63.64%.ConclusionAs the supplement of caloric test,180-degree vertical plane non-dampingswing method may prove helpful in assessment of semicircular canal function.
