Benincasa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn., belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae, is avegetable used widely in Thailand, India, and other semi-tropical countries. In Ayurveda, wax gourd is recommended for management of peptic ulcer, hemorrhages from internalorgans, and epilepsy and other nervous disorders. It is also known to possessanti-nociceptive, anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, antioxidant and angiotension-converting enzyme inhibition capacities, and anorectic effects. In China, its seeds areobtained from the inside of dried, matured Benincasa hispida, which is harvestedduring the months of August and September.Benincasa hispida seed salso have theprincipal functions of diuresis, and are therefore used in the treatments of differentedema such as those due to sclerosis of liver and beriberi. Researchers have reportedthat the seed extract of Benincasa hispida facilitates mucus secretion and thus has anexpectorant effect, and prevents gastric ulcer. It is also reported that the seed extract ofBenincasa hispida has inhibitory effects on histamine secretion and anti-tumor effectsby enhancing immunoreactions. However, when it came to phytochemical studies, therewere few reports. Therefore, we carried out phytochemical investigation systematicallyon parts of the extracts.Based on that, In order to find the bioactive compounds exploit and utilize thismedicinal plant, the studies on chemical constituents from Benincasa hispida (Thunb.)Cogn. were carried out. The main innovation and academic contributions of this thesisare presented as follows:Firstly, reviewed the relevant literature about the plants of Cucurbitaceae andBenincasa hispida, and carried out a detailed overview of them chemical compositions, pharmacological activity to provide a reference for further research and development.Secondly,20compounds were isolated from Benincasa hispida. By means ofspectroscopic analysis and physicochemical properties,18compounds were identified. They were multiflorenol (K-1),(3β,5α,20R,24S)-stigmasta-7, trans-22 -dien-3-ol (K-2), stigmasta-7-en-3-ol (K-3), α-spinasterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(K-4),stigmasta-7-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (K-5), isomultiflorenyl acetate (K-6),arbutin (K-7), nicotinic acid (K-8), ethyl-β-D-gluco pyranoside (K-9),(+)-pinonesinol(K-10), β-sitosterol (K-11), daucosterol (K-12),3-O-trans-Cinnamoyl-29-O-trans-Cinnamoylmultiflora-7,9(11)-diene-3α,29-diol (K-13), oleanolic acid-28-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1â†'3)-β-D-xylopyranosyl-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1â†'4)]-(1â†'3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1â†'2)-α-L-arabinopyranoside (K-14), oleanolic acid-28-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1â†'4)]-(1â†'3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1â†'2)-α-L-arabinopyranoside (K-15), palmitinic acid (K-16), stearic acid (K-17), glycerol(K-18)。3-O-trans-Cinnamoyl-29-O-trans-Cinnamoylmultiflora-7,9(11)-diene-3α,29-diol (K-13), oleanolic acid-28-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1â†'3)-β-D-xylopyranosyl-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1â†'4)]-(1â†'3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1â†'2)-α-L-arabinopyranoside (K-14), oleanolic acid-28-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1â†'4)]-(1â†'3)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1â†'2)-α-L-arabinopyranoside (K-15),were isolatedfor the first time.Under the direction of theory and clinical practice of traditional Chinese medicin,Benincasa hispida growing in Yunnan province was subjected to phytochemical studies. What we have done is helpful for rational development and utilization of Benincasahispida.
