Objective: To analysis the depression of adolescents aged9to17in Wuhan City, HubeiProvince, to explore the relationship between depression and the growth and development ofmale and female adolescents, so as to provide the basis for the development of adolescentmental health education policy.Methods: By using cross-sectional study, a total of3007target students was a city-widerespective sample from one primary school, one junior middle school and one high school inWuhan,and as well as from three schools in rural area of Wuhan. By random clustersampling stratified with grades, classes as units. We used general survey, PubertalDevelopment Scale (PDS), the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI) to conducted aquestionnaire survey. We measured the height, weight, and hip circumferences by followingthe investigation of physical fitness standard trained professionals under the guidelines ofNational Standard Working Manuals strictly. Secondary sexual characteristics were assessedaccording to Tanner method and the testicular volume was determined by Praderorchidometer. SPSS17.0was used to do analysis including descriptive analysis, t-test,Chi-square test, variance of analysis and logistic regression to all the data above.Result: A total number of3007students were investigated. There were1578boys and1429girls, and the ratio of male to female ratio was1.10:1. There were1631urban and1376ruralstudents, and the ratio of urban to rural ratio was1.18:1.The relationship between demographic characteristics condition of students and depression: (1)Gender: depression detection rate of the girls was20.36%, that of the boys was17.43%,depression risk of girls is1.212times to the boys.(2)Residence:depression detection rate ofthe rural adolescents was20.36%,and that of urban was16.15%, depression detection risk ofrural boys is1.458times to the city boys.(3)Age,Grade: the depression risk of girls increasewith age and grade,such increasing trend was not found in boys.(4)Family structure:thedepression risk of girls increase with the complexity of family structure,the depressiondifferences of boys in different family structure was not statistically significant.(5)Poordomestic economic conditions was the risk factors of depression of adolescents.(6) Aerobicphysical exercise was the protective factors of depression of adolescents.The relationship between depression and pubertal development in adolescents:(1)the growth and development:Slim and fat self-evaluation was the risk factors ofdepression of boys,overweight and fat self-evaluation was the risk factors of depression ofgirls;the risk of suffering from depression of boys increase2.244times with the rise of BMIgrouping, the risk of suffering from depression of girls increase2.244times with the rise ofBMI grouping;(2)Sexual development:The risk of suffering from depression of girlsearly-maturation self-evaluation is1.540times to the girls normal self-evaluation, was therisk factors of depression of girls; the risk of suffering from depression of girls ahead ofpubertal timing is1.387times to the girls normal, was the risk factors of depression ofadolescents. The risk of suffering from depression of girls with breast development inadvanced is1.612times to the normal breast development girls, the risk of suffering fromdepression of girls with early menarche is2.116times to the girls with normal menarche.Conclusion:Depression in boys is closely related to residence, family economic conditions,physical exercise, growth and development of self-assessment, BMI. Depression in girls isclosely related to age, grade, family structure, family economic conditions, physical exercise,growth and development of self-assessment, BMI, sexual development of self-assessment,pubertal timing and breast development timing menarche timing.
