Objective To study the metabolic changes of auditory cortex in patients with kidney deficiency syndrome of presbycusis by using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS). and to investigate the relationship of kidney-deficiency and the initiation of presbycusis.Methods10normal hearing volunteers (youth group)、10normal hearing elderly with kidney deficiency (aged group) and8patients with kidney deficiency syndrome of presbycusis (presbycusis group) were checked with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. N-acetylaspartic acid (NAA), creatine (Cr), choline (Cho)、γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)、 glutamic acid compound (Glu) were measured and conducted with half-quantitative analysis. The differences between the patients with youth group、aged group and presbycusis group were analyzed. At last, correlative analysis was made to explore the relationship between the degree of "kidney deficiency" and the metabolic changes of auditory cortex in patients with presbycusis. Results Compared with youth group, reduced NAA/Cr, increased Cho/Cr were found in the aged group and presbycusis group (p<0.05). GABA/Cr ratio and Glu/Cr ratio were significant difference in presbycusis group and youth group (p<0.05).There were no significant difference in the GABA/Cr and Glu/Cr ratios in the bilateral auditory cortex between patients with youth group and aged group (p>0.05).Compared with aged group, the metabolic changes of auditory cortex in patients with kidney deficiency syndrome of presbycusis were remarkable (p<0.05)Conclusion1H-MRS is a noninvasive technique that can provide useful information concerning the metabolic changes of auditory cortex in human. The development of presbycusis may be associated with the degree of "kidney deficiency" getting worse. Compared with aged group, kidney deficiency syndrome of presbycusis may be related to decreased of NAA and GABA, increased of Cho and Glu content in the bilateral auditory cortex.
