Objective: To observe the effect of Angong Niuhuang Pill on awaking time, neuralfunction, blood sugar, volume of cerebral infarction, the weight of the liver, kidney andthe serum of IL-18and TNF-α in acute cerebral infarction rats. To discuss the possiblemechanism of the treatment of acute cerebral infarction rats with Angong Niuhuang Pill. Methods: The healthy male SD rats were randomly divided into5groups: sham group, model group, traditional chinese medicine group, western medicine group, combinedchinese and western medicine group. The focal cerebral ischemia model of rats wereestablished by thread embolism method. To record the awaking time, observe neurologicaldeficits at different time points, detect the blood sugar, test the level of serum IL-18andTNF-α and the weight of liver and kidney and measure the volume of cerebral infarction. Results: The time of awakening and the level of serum IL-18and TNF-α and volume ofcerebral infarction all increased distinctly(P<0.05) compared to sham group. Eachtreatment group can shorten the time of awakening and reduce the level of serum IL-18and TNF-α and narrow volume of cerebral infarction (P<0.05) compared to model group. And Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine treatment showed more significanteffects compared with other groups, but the effect of traditional chinese medicine groupand western Medicine had no statistical difference (P>0.05). Compared to sham group, each group appear neurological defect. Compared with model group, neurological defectin each treatment group was decreased (P>0.05) on12h. Neurological defect in eachtreatment group was decreased (P<0.05) on24h and48h. Combined traditional chineseand western medicine group were more significant than traditional chinese medicine groupand western medicine group(P<0.05), there were no obvious differences between chinesetraditional medicine group and western medicine group (P>0.05). There were high blood sugar in sham group, but the others were no abnormal. The weight of the liver andkidney were no obvious differences in each group. Conclusion: Angong Niuhuang Pillmay play an important role in protecting brain from ischemia injury and especially duringit combines with conventional western medicine, one of its mechanism maybe haverelation to reducing the level of serum IL-18and TNF-α, improving neurological defectand reducing volume of cerebral infarction.
