PurposeAnalyze the reasons and interrelated factors that necessitate theimmediate reoperation on recently diagnosed thyroid cancer patients;discuss the indications and proper surgical technique for the thyroid cancerreoperation.MethodsRetrospective analysis of clinical data on the58patients with thyroidcancer who underwent surgery within3months of thyroid cancer diagnosisin the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, fromSeptember2007to May2011. All of the58patients;10were male and48cases were female, the age ranged between7to75years and the medianage40.6years, all of the patients were operated second time and allunderwent total thyroidectomy accompanied with ipsilateral modified neckdissection or Ⅵ region lymph node dissection after the relevantexamination and pathology consultation. Combination of relevant literatureto discuss the timing and manner of thyroid cancer reoperation. ResultsPost operative pathological exam confirmed presence of residualcancer in36cases; residual cancer rate was62.07%, among these residualcancers: the primary site tumor was found in7cases, pure lymph nodemetastasis cancer in13cases and both residual cancer in primary site andlymph node metastasis in16cases.ConclusionProper reoperation approach for thyroid cancer is to include theipsilateral total thyroidectomy or subtotal thyroidectomy along withelective lymph node dissection depending on the condition of primary sitetumor and the pathological types of the cancer. The reasonable reoperationapproach can be effective in reducing the incidence and recurrence ofcomplications, at the same time provide the conditions for the I131treatmentfollow up, monitoring of serum thyroglobulin, reduction of possibility ofrepeated surgery and improve the patient’s survival.
