Applied Anatomical Study On Reconstructions Of Portal Vein And Renal Vein Using The Femoral Vein

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the feasibility and safety of portal vein(PV) and renal vein (RV) reconstructions with femoral vein (FV).METHOD:60adults corpses (male32, female28) fixed with formalinwere randomly used. The femoral vein, popliteal vein, deep femoral vein,communicating vein, portal vein and renal vein were dissected, observedand measured. The available femoral vein was the segment of femoral veinfrom the point at which deep femoral vein empties into femoral vein to thelower edge of abductor hiatus. The length of the available femoral vein,portal vein, renal vein and their squashed diameter were measured.RESULTS：1. The length of the available femoral vein in male andfemale was18.8cm±2.3cm and15.1cm±1.5cm, respectively. Thediameter of squashed vein in male and female was15.8mm±0.8mm and14.0mm±1.1mm, respectively. The length was significantly correlated withgender and height. The double-femoral vein was observed in16sides(14%). The femoral-popliteal collateral vein was observed in48sides(42.1%). The deep femoral-popliteal communicating vein was observed in 38sides (33.3%). There were20sides (17.5%) observed with none of thecommunicating vein.2. The length of the portal vein, left renal vein andright renal vein was6.8cm±0.8cm,6.5cm±0.6cm and2.8cm±0.5cm,respectively. The diameter of the squashed portal vein, left renal vein andright renal vein was19.2mm±0.8mm,20.4mm±0.6mm and17.4mm±0.7mm, respectively. There was no gender difference betweenthem.CONCLUSIONS:1. It is a reliable and safety to harvest femoral veinas a vascular graft because of the existence of the great saphenous vein andcommunicating vein between the popliteal vein and femoral vein or deepfemoral vein.2. The femoral vein can be used as a conduit for vascularreconstruction of the portal vein and renal vein.
