ObjectiveTo study the bone mineral density (BMD) and analyze therelationship between height, weight and body mass index (BMI) inpatients with β-thalassemia major.Material and MethodsCase group:54cases with β-thalassemia major in10-19years old,34males and20females. Height and weight were measured and bodymass index (BMI) were calculated. The BMD of lumbar vertebrae and leftfemur was measured by dual energy X-ray absorption meter (DEXA) andthe data was analyzed.Control group: to use Li Xiaoyang collected84cases of normal maleand71cases of normal female in10-19years old, and its value as areference. Our research including the following items:①differences in weight, height, BMI, lumbar spine and proximal left femur BMD in case groupand control group;②differences in weight, height, BMI, lumbar spineand proximal left femur BMD in male and female patients withβ-thalassemia major;③make the control group’s value as a reference, analysis the lumbar spine and proximal left femur BMD change inpatients with β-thalassemia major;④analysis the distribution of BMD inlumbar vertebral and left femur districts in patients with β-thalassemiamajor;⑤difference of BMD in lumbar spine and proximal left femur inpatients with β-thalassemia major;⑥the correlation analysis of theLumbar spine and left proximal femur BMD with weight, age, height,BMI in patients with β-thalassemia major.Results1.Female patients with β-thalassemia major’s body weight, height,BMI and the BMD of the lumbar and left femur was significantly lowerthan their peers of normal female, the difference was statisticallysignificant (t=-8.533,t=-8.165,t=-5.172,t=-5.701,t=-16.932,P=0.000,respectively).2.Male patients with β-thalassemia major’s body weight, height,BMI and the BMD of left femur was significantly lower than their peersof normal male, the difference was statistically significant (t=-16.531,t=-10.635, t=-10.328, t=-8.226,P=0.000,respectively). TheBMD of the lumbar with their peers of normal male was no significant difference(t=-0.140,P=0.890).3.The weight, height, BMI, the BMD of lumar, left femur was nosignificant difference in female and male patients with β-thalassemiamajor.4.Make the control group’s value as a reference to the bone mineraldensity.Female patients with β-thalassemia major’s lumbar66.7%performance for osteoporosis,22.2%performance for low bone mass, andthe left femur40%performance for osteoporosis,55%performance forlow bone mass. Male patients with β-thalassemia major’s lumbar28%performance for low bone mass, and the left femur14.7%performancefor osteoporosis,52.9%performance for low bone mass.5.β-thalassemia major’s vertebral BMD in female patients: L1> L3>L2> L4, male patients: L1> L2> L3> L4, all patients: L1> L2> L3> L4.The BMD of left femur in female, male and all patients were: femoralshaft> femoral neck> Wards triangle> troch.6.The BMD of left femur and lumar in female and male patientswith β-thalassemia major differences were statistically significant(t=-2.68, t=5.57,P〈0.05,respectively).7.Female patients with β-thalassemia major: the BMD of lumbar hascorrelation with weight, BMI, no correlation with age, height; the BMDof left femur has correlation with age, BMI, no correlation with height, weight; The BMD of lumbar and left femur has correlation with BMI. 8.Male patients with β-thalassemia major: the BMD of lumbar hascorrelation with height, weight, no correlation with age, BMI; the BMDof left femur has correlation with height, weight and BMI, no correlationwith age;The BMD of lumbar and left femur has correlation withheight,weight.Conclusion1.β-thalassemia major Patients’ height, weight, BMI wassignificantly lower than normal peers, the difference was statisticallysignificant.2.β-thalassemia major Patients’ lumbar and femoral bone mineraldensity in the presence of low bone mass and osteoporosis. Theperformance of low bone mass and osteoporosis is sensitive andwidespread in femur. The BMD of left femur and lumar in patients withβ-thalassemia major differences were statistically significant.3.β-thalassemia major Patients with vertebral BMD in L1-L4vertebral body was reduced gradually from top to bottom. The BMD offemur: shaft>neck>wards> torch.4.The BMD of lumbar and left femur in female patients withβ-thalassemia major has correlation with BMI. The BMD of lumbar andleft femur in male patients with β-thalassemia major has correlation withheight, weight.
