Objective: To investigate the change of bone mineral density (BMD) and incidenceof osteoporosis in postmenopausal patients with type2diabetes mellitus (T2DM).Methods: The subject of the study were57postmenopausal patients withT2DM(T2DMgroup)and70normal controls(control group). Using the dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA)made by MEDILINK company in France to measure the BMD of lumbarspine(L1~4)and proximal femur(femoral neck, total hip), then analyse the individualdifferences of BMD and incidence osteoporosis between two groups. The relationshipsbetween the changes of BMD and age, BMI, duration of diabetes and duration ofmenopause were observed in postmenopausal patients with T2DM. Results:1. The BMDin postmenopausal patients with T2DM was lower than that of the control group. Thedifference of lumbar spine, left femoral neck, left total hip and right total hip betweenT2DM group and control group had statistical significance(P<0.05), expect right femoralneck(P>0.05).2.29patients in T2DM group were osteoporosis(50.9%),23patients in thecontrol group were osteoporosis(32.9%). The group of T2DM had a higher incidence ofosteoporosis than the control group(P<0.05).3. Among55osteoporosis skeletal sites,27were lumbar spine(49.1%),16were left proximal femur(29.1%),12were right proximalfemur(21.8%).4. The BMD was correlated with the age, duration of menopause, BMI,duration of diabetes in postmenopausal patients with T2DM. Conclusion:1. T2DM wasan important factor in postmenopausal women with OP.2. The lumbar spine had thehighest prevalence of osteoporosis in postmenopausal patients with type2diabetesmellitus.3. age, duration of menopause, BMI, duration of diabetes were importantdeterminant of BMD values and osteoporosis incidence in postmenopausal patients withT2DM.
