Objective To evaluate the efficacy of Absorbable artificial bone in percutaneous kyphoplasty(PKP) treatment for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures(OVCF).Methods From May2010to August2011,Twenty patients who suffered osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures were treated by percutaneous kyphoplasty with PolymethyMethacrylate (PMMA) and Absorbable artificial bone. Clinical effects were evaluated by observing the changes of visual analogues scales (VAS), daily life function, height of anterior of the compression vertebrae and evaluated by using modified Macnab on two days postoperative and six months after operation. Results All patients were punctuerd and operated successfully. PMMA group VAS score fell from8.32±0.76peroperative to2.35±0.86postoperative, and was2.17±0.76at six months after operation. The score of daily life function decreased from3.3±0.8to1.6±0.5, and was1.4±0.5at six months after operation. The height of anterior of the compression vertebrae was increased from16.1±1.8mm to19.1±2.0mm, and was18.8±2.0at six months after operation, The excellent and good rates we evaluated by using modified Macnab were80%on two days postoperative and90%at six months after operation. Absorbable artificial bone group VAS score fell from8.22±0.79peroperative to4.07±1.05postoperative, and was2.57±0.98at six months after operation. The score of daily life function decreased from3.4±0.7to2.6±0.7, and was1.5±0.5at six months after operation. The height of anterior of the compression wertebrae was increased from16.2±1.6mm to18.8±1.9mm, and was18.2±1.6at six months after operation, The excellent and good rates we evaluated by using modified Macnab were10%on two days postoperative and80%at six months after operation. No severe side-effects were observed after operation and follow-up. The indicators of postoperative and six month follow-up had a significant difference compared with preoperative in two group.(P<0.05).In PMMA group, there was no significant difference between postoperative s and indicatoer of six month follow-up(P>0.05), But in Absorbable artificial bone group, six month follow-up had a significant difference compared with postoperative(P <0.05). Conclusion Use Absorbable artificial bone by the percutaneous kyphoplasty in treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures can effectively restore the compression vertebraes height, relive pain at long-term and have no obvious postoperative complications. Defect is in postoperative short-term, it can not effectively relieve pain than PMMA and the prices is Higher, Absorbable artificial bone can not entirely replace the PMMA in percutaneous kyphoplasty.
