Objective:To investigate the expression and distribution of Interleukin-1beta (IL-1(3) in oral lichen planus(OLP), and further discuss its possible role in pathology of OLP.Methods:The SP immunohistochemistry was used for detecting the expression and distribution of IL-1β in tissues of8normal controllers and24patients suffering from OLP(12cases of erosive OLP,12cases of non-erosive OLP). And image processing system was used to analyse the average optical density (OD) valueResults:(1) A positive expression of IL-1(3was detected in normal oral mucosa. The positive cells were mainly distributed in stratum corneum and partly in basal cell layer.(2) An increasing positive expression of IL-1β was detected in mucosa with oral lichen planus, in which there is much lymphocytic infiltrate in the lamina propria. The positive cells were mainly distributed in stratum corneum, basal cell layer and lymphocytic, while partly in the prickle cell layer.(3) In comparison to normal oral mucosa, an increasing positive expression of IL-1β was detected in mucosa of oral lichen planus(p<0.05)(4) IL-1β was increased significantly at erosive OLP, in comparison to non-erosive OLP(p<0.05) Conclusions:(1) Comparing with the normal oral mucosa, the expression of IL-1β was significantly increased in OLP tissues. It indicated that IL-1β may contribute to the pathogenisis of OLP.(2) Comparing with the non-erosive OLP, the expression of IL-1β was significantly increased in erosive OLP tissues. High expression of IL-1β indicate the active period of OLP.
