Objective Method to detect the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and osteop-ontin(OPN) expressions in thyroid benign lesions and papillary thyroid cancer byimmunohistochemistry,in order to further clarify the relationship between VDRand OPN expressions and calcification in papillary thyroid cancer, and itsrelationship with the occurrence and development of thyroid cancer. Methods Selected60cases of papillary thyroid cancer,15cases ofnodular goiter,15cases of thyroid adenoma, which are confirmed through thehistopathological examination, from January2008to October2011admitted bythe Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital. Then detected the VDR and OPNexpressions in different thyroid tissues by immunohistochemistry. Results (1)The positive expression rate of VDR in papillary thyroidcancer and thyroid benign lesions are81.67%and16.66%, both positiveexpression rates with significant difference (P <0.01);The positive expressionrate of OPN in papillary thyroid cancer and thyroid benign lesions are85.00%and23.33%, both positive expression rates with significant difference(P <0.01)(2) VDR and OPN expressions are no significant difference with sex,age andlymph node metastasis, but there is a statistically significant difference andpositive correlation with the tumor size and whether calcification (3) There is apositive correlation between VDR and OPN expressions in papillary thyroidcancer (4) In the calcified and non-calcified papillary thyroid cancer, there is asignificant difference between calcification and tumor size. Conclusions (1) VDR and OPN expressions in papillary thyroid cancer issignificantly higher than thyroid benign lesions, suggesting that VDR and OPNand the occurrence of papillary thyroid cancer may be related (2) Mass sizegreater than1cm and the presence of calcification in papillary thyroidcancer,VDR and OPN expressions levels are significantly increased, and VDRand OPN expressions positively correlate, that’s all suggest that the VDR andOPN may affect the process of papillary thyroid cancer and formation withcalcification.
