Objective: To observe nasal cavity mucosa morphologic and functional changesboth preoperatively and postoperatively in laryngeal cancer patients treated with totallaryngectomy.Methods:①Saccharin test of nasal cavity mucosa were taken preoperativelyand postoperatively in20cases with laryngeal cancer.②Electron nasopharyngoscopeexamination were taken preoperatively and postoperatively the nasalcavity in20caseswith laryngeal cancer.③Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electronmicroscope were performed to exam preoperatively and postoperatively thenasalcavity mucosa in15cases with laryngeal cancer.Results:①The postoperative(three months after the operation)saccharin testtime became shorter than that in preoperative one.Athough there were no significantdifference (P>0.05),and the postoperative(eighteen months after the operation)saccharin test time in laryngeal cancer patients was longer than the preoperative one(P<0.05).②The examination of electron nasopharyngoscope demonstrated that thenasal cavity is relatively wide, the structure is atrophic, the mucosa is thin, rigid, andchanged in color, however, compared with the preoperative, there is no significantchange in nasal cavity normal structure after three months operation.③Theexamination of electron microscopy demonstrated that the ultrastructure of nasalcavity mucosa between the postoperative (three months after the operation) and thepreoperative were similar. But the ultrastructure of nasal cavity mucosa wasimpaired postoperatively(eighteen months after the operation),We found the ciliastructural abnormalities and the abnormal phenomena of the lamina propria underSEM and TEM respectively. Conclusions: The nasal cavity normal structure, ultramicrostructure and clearance function of mucosa in the postoperative (eighteen months after theoperation) was impaired.however, compared with the preoperative, there is nosignificant change in nasal cavity normal structure, ultramicrostructure and mucosalclearance function after three months operation.
