Treating diarrhea, TCM has the advantage of the comprehensive function by observing the whole body and using different treatment method to deal with different symptoms.ObjectiveMany doctors of traditional Chinese medicine in past dynasties through the long-term clinical observation and practicing, has accumulated rich experience of drug using, gradually improved the etiology, symptoms and treatment recognition of diarrhea and accumulated the massive relevant literature material. Among them, the discusses of diarrhea in "treatise on febrile disease" is extremely detailed. According to statistics, there are ninety articles involving diarrhea in "treatise on febrile disease", which include thirty prescription and fifty articles diseasing syndrome and prescription. It laid the foundation for diagnosis and treatment of diarrhea. The doctors later, such as the four famous doctors in jin and yuan dynasty and the famous doctors of Seasonal Febrile Diseases discussed the treatment of diarrhea on their own views. There are a lot of literature research for diarrhea, but most of them lack of systematic induction. In view of this, this paper is sorting literature to comb zhongjing and later doctors the treatment of diarrhea.MethodsFirst of all, clear definition and classification of diarrhea, define the scope discussed in this paper. Dysentery and normal diarrhea is not included in the category discussed in this paper. Second, comb the relevant provisions of diarrhea in the "treatise on febrile disease", summarize the clinical thought of diagnosis and treatment for diarrhea. Third, look through the theory of "The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine" and later doctors’ work, contrast with the modern related literature, summarize characteristics of every doctor’s diagnosis and treatment for diarrhea. Then compare zhongjing’s method of treating diarrhea with later doctors’, analyze similarities and differences and innovative points, summarize historic achievement and clinical significance of zhongjing’s academic thoughts in diagnosis and treatment for diarrhea. At last, sort out practical system of diagnosis and treatment for diarrhea.ConclusionSorting through the dynasties literature, we find the things follows.(1) The main pathogenic evil of diarrhea is damp evil. Cold, heat, dry, and the wind evil can also cause to diarrhea. Disease location is given priority to spleen. Stomach, and liver, bravery, kidney, lung, colon, small intestine is closely related to diarrhea. The pathogenesis of diarrhea is that improper diet and irregular life and emotional disorders lead to decline of Zheng Qi, then damp evil, and cold, heat, dry, and the wind evil take the opportunity to attack the body, or the function of liver, bravery, lung, kidney or spleen and stomach itself disorder, result in Qi dysfunction, spleen transformation failure, intestinal incapacitated from separating clear and excreting turbid, colon incapable of change to cause diarrhea. The therapeutic method inducing diuresis with bland drug, elevating, cooling, catharsis, sweet flavor slowing, sour flavor astringing, drying spleen, warming kidney, inducing astringency, treating diarrhea with purgative.(2) The diagnosis and treatment of diarrhea of zhongjing’s thoughts originated in the "The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine", zhongjing consider the main cause of diarrhea is cold, heat, damp evil. The later doctors’thoughts were based on zhongjing’s theory, they developed zhongjing’s theory.(3)We start from the clinical manifestations such as feces smell and quality, concomitant symptom to summarize the clinical diagnosis and treatment program of diarrhea. And then distinguish the main causes such as cold, heat, damp evil, with the six channels in the "treatise on febrile disease" to be axes to differentiate disease location. Finally make zhongjing’s prescription for six-channel diarrhea as basic prescription treatment to cure diarrhea.
