Objective:Through observing the location of blood vessels presenting on the sclera of patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and Shao Yang pattern to explore the relationship between the location of prominent sclera blood vessels and the diagnoses using the template of Chen Da Fu’s work on the Six Channel Pattern Differentiation of TCM ophthalmology.Method:Fifty patients with diabetes mellitus and Shao Yang syndrome were observed and photographed to note the presence of prominent blood vessels appearing on the sclera. All data were collected and analysed using the IBM statistical package SPSS20.0for mean variance and multiple response data distribution. Results:The mean occurrence of the number of-sectors with prominent blood vessels in the right eye is2.2±1.2; in the left eye2.5±1.5and the total between the right and left eye is3.6±1.6. The ANOVA test shows a significance difference between the three groups, with no significant difference between the left and right eye but a significant increase of sectors in the total of the right and left eye combined when compared to either the right or left eye alone, P<0.01. The most frequent occurrence of blood vessels was in the Xun sector (Gall Bladder), being62%for the left eye and48%for the right; followed by the Kan sector (Bladder), being40%for the left eye and38%for the right eye; then the Li sector (Small Intestine), being30%for the both eyes; then the Zhen sector (Ming Men), being34%for the left and22%for the right; the least frequent sector was the Kun sector (stomach), with only10%in the left eye and6%in the right eye. Conelusion:In patients with diabetes mellitus and Shao Yang pattern, blood vessels appearing on the sclera mainly manifest in the Xun sector, combined with Kan, Dui, Li and Zhen sectors. This suggests patients with the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and Shao Yang pattern have a correlation with the Gall Bladder, followed by San Jiao and Bladder. Observing the sclera for prominent blood vessels may be a viable method in the TCM pattern diagnosis of illnesses, and is worthy of future investigations and research.
