Objective To investigate the clinical and pathological characteristics of non-diabetic renal diseases (NDRD) in the patients with diabetes mellitus. Methods Two hundred and two patients with diabetes mellitus and NDRD identified by renal biopsy from January1st,2003to January31st,2010were analyzed retrospectively. All patients were divided into three groups:the young(≤35years old), the middle-aged (36-59years old) and the elder (≥60years old). Results In the young group (n=33),42.4%presented as chronic glomerulonephritic syndrome, while36.4%as IgA nephropathy for pathological lesions. In the group of middle-aged patients (n=136),35.3%presented as chronic glomerulonephritic syndrome,27.2%presented as nephritic syndrome,17.6%presented as chronic renal failure,14.7%had latent glomerulonephritis, and5.4%had acute renal failure. For pathological lesions,42.6%of all these patients had IgA nephropathy. In the elder group (n=33),30.3%presented as nephritic syndrome,30.3%presented as chronic renal failure.27.3%had membranous nephropathy. Conclusion In the group of young patients, clinical manifestation was mainly chronic glomerulonephritic syndrome, for the middle-aged patients, clinical manifestation were diversified, nephritic syndrome and chronic renal failure were in the main portion in the elder group. For pathological lesion, the young and middle-aged groups presented mainly as IgA nephropathy. which was much more than in the elder group, while the elder group had more membranous nephropathy.
