Depressive Symptoms Is A Risk Factor For Onset Of Type2Diabetes Mellitus:Systematic Reviews

Aims:The existing large amount of evidence has suggested a link between depression and diabetes, depression increase rate of onset of diabetes, or diabetes make depression increases. It is unclear that the mechanism between both. But these are some literatures implies, depression is not only a complications of diabetes, also can be a risk factor for the onset of type2diabetes mellitus, this paper mainly discusses the latter relationship.Methods:Medline, embase, wanfang data, VIP data and Chinese Medical Current Contents were searched for articles published from1996.01—2011.10. All studies that examined the relationship between depression and the onset of type2diabetes mellitus were included. Pooled relative risks were calculated using fixed and random effects models by meta-analysis. To explore sources of heterogeneity between studies, subgroup analyses and Sensitivity analyses were performed. Assessment of publication bias, a funnel plot was drawn.Results:Finally the eight studies included for the meta-analysis, the forest plot suggested no heterogeneity between studies (P=0.286I2=18.2%), the pooled relative risk was1.551(1.410-1.707) by the fixed effects model. The funnel plot shows the basic symmetry plot, implied less possibility of publication bias. Conclusions:The patients who had depressive symptoms or depression have a55%increased risk of developing type2diabetes mellitus. The mechanisms between two is unclear, and warrant further research. A large number of randomized controlled trials are needed to test whether effective control or treatment of depressive symptoms or depression can reduce the incidence of type2diabetes mellitus.
