| Objective To investigate the expression and distribution of adiponectin(APN) in periodontium during orthodontic tooth movement in rats. Methods Thirty-five male SD rats (200-250g,9-week-old) were randomly divided into seven groups, containing one control group(without orthodontic appliance) and six experimental groups(orthodontic appliances were used for1,3,5,7,10,14days, respectively). Each group contained five rats. Tooth movement was induced by a nickel-titanium(Ni-Ti) alloy coil spring as an orthodontic appliance inserted between the upper left first molar and the upper incisors. All the rats were respectively sacrificed at the end of each experimental period. The alveolar bone containing the upper left first molar were dissected out and tested the expression and distribution of adiponectin in periodontium by immunohistochemistry. Results Adiponectin existed in normal periodontium. The expression of adiponectin in periodontium altered during orthodontic tooth movement. The expression of adiponectin decreased both in the pressure side and the tension side after applying orthodontic force, and reached the minimum on day5and7, respectively. In the pressure side, the expression of adiponectin increased on day7,10,14. In the tension side, the expression of adiponectin increased on day10, 14. The expression of adiponectin could be seen in fibroblasts, osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Conclusion Our data suggest that adiponectin express in periodontium during orthodontic tooth movement. Adiponectin may participate in the early stage of inflammatory reaction and the later stage of tissue restoration and reconstruction, and it may play an important role in several stage of periodontium remodeling during orthodontic tooth movement. |
