Flos Edgeworthlae is a shrub mainly growing in the south of the Yangtze River valley, Henan and Shanxi. And it is traditional herb medicine for treatment of some diseases, such as more tears, nocturnal emissions, aphonia and so on.In this thesis Flos Edgeworthlae was extracted with95%ethanol. Five fractions have been obtained by systematically separating the extracts. In order to provide a theoretical basis for the comprehensive development and utilization of Flos Edgeworthlae, antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Clostridium perfringens and Bacillus cereus by the extractive fractions of Flos Edgeworthlae has been studied. The results show that the extracts from petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol showed activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens); The water layer residues showed no activity against the five pathogens. In this thesis antioxidant activity of the extractive fractions of Flos Edgeworthlae was respeetively studied by the reducing power, seavenging activity of hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radicals and nitrite. The results show that the extracts from petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate,n-butanol and water layer residues showed different antioxidant activity. The extracts from ethyl acetate showed the strongest reducing power, the extracts from chloroform showed the strongest seavenging activity of nitrite, the extracts from petroleum ether showed the same seavenging activity of hydroxyl radical and superoxide anion radicals with VC.In this thesis we report the systematie studies on the Flos Edgeworthlae, and eight compounds have been isolated from it, their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and chemical analyses. They were identified as:β-sitosterol (1),1,2-Benzenedi-carboxylic acid diisooctyl ester (2), Gutamic acid5-methyl ester (3), Daucostero(4), salicylic acid (5),8-(4-(l,3-benzenediol)propionic acid ethyl ester)--coumarin (6), Tiliroside (7), Rutin (8), and the compounds2,3and6were isolated from the plant for the first time.
