Objective To investigate the animal model of New Zealand white rabbits for further research in post-traumatic osteomyelitis of tibia. Methods Post-traumatic osteomyelitis was induced in Fourty-two healthy adult New Zealand white rabbits by injecting0.1ml standard Staphylococcus aureus suspension (ATCC25923) with3x10^7CFU/ml into frature site after making their right tibia open fracture with self-made stent. No antibiotics were administrated after surgery, Results was evaluated by the parameters of clinical observation, radiology, bacteriology and histopathology.Result Thirty-eight rabbits were successfully modeled and the rate of that is up to91%. Conlusion This method for modeling, characterized by high successful rate, is more convenient and parallel to the clinical manifestation. Thus, this approach of modeling post-traumatic osteomyelitis will provide a practical and effective method for further research.
