Objective: The purpose of the study is to find out the prevalence of primary open-angleglaucoma (POAG) and the situation of large optic cup in healthy persons aged 50 or above inTaiyuan. To provide data for my province glaucoma epidemiology survey. To look for myprovince specific instances of glaucoma blindness prevention screening model and provide thebasis for our the province for the prevention of blindness .Methods: Questionnaire surveys were conducted and non-mydriatic digital fundus photographywas taken for more than 50-years old people who had physical examination in First Hospital ofShanxi Medical University Medical Center from 2010.6 to 2011.4. The vertical cup-disc ratio ismeasure and calculate by Image-pro plus6.0 image processing software .Glaucoma screeningtests were made for the above people whose vertical cup disk ratio (VCDR)≥0.6 and above orbelow the disc along the narrowed staff (including intraocular pressure, slit lamp, standardautomated primetry, optical coherence tomography and central corneal thickness). Results: A total of screened people whose fundus photo can be used is 3255. Number of peoplewith VCDR≥0.5 was 428, accounting for 13.15 percent of total screened people. Through thequestionnaire, 18 people know they are suffering from glaucoma. Vertical cup disk ratio (VCDR)≥0.6 and above or below the disc along the narrowed staff is 101. After oral or telephoneinterviews, 59 people participated in the diagnostic tests, the response rate was 58.41%. Throughdiagnostic tests, 12 were diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma, 16 people suspectedprimary open-angle glaucoma. The distribution of vertical cup disk ratio is approximates apostivily skewed distribution, the comparison is no difference in the vertical cup-disc ratio in sex,cup-disc ratio have increasing trend with age .Conclusion: The percentage of people with the large optic cup increased with age. Thecomparison between male and female with large optic cup was no differences. Screening inhigh risk people of glaucoma (opportunistic screening) can early detect primary open-angleglaucoma. From further diagnosis and treatment, the quality of life of patients will beensignificantly improved. People’s health awareness of glaucoma in China needs to be improved. To strengthen health education and screening will be the key to the prevention and treatmentglaucoma.
