A Survey On Knowledge, Behaviors And HIV Infection Among Female Sex Workers In Xining City

ObjectivesTo learn about how the female sex workers’cognition and related behavior also attitude of AIDS’prevention. To explore the prevalence of HIV and syphilis among those female sex workers, which may provide information for developing AIDS and STD’s prevention and making references on controlling strategy.MethodsThis investigation was carried out in the place of entertainment that distributes at four districts of Xining, where sex workers may exist. Taking the principle of informed consent, and the respondents are women who engaged in commercial sexual services. The workers in High risk behavior intervention team who had been trained unified as investigators. While doing the face to face oral questionnaire, after investigation the questionnaire should be collected immediately. Meanwhile, participants’vein blood was collected by professional medical staff and detected by CDC’s center laboratory. Data is collected by EpiData3.0and analyzed by SPSS13.0.Results(1) The basic information of female sex workers:four hundreds sex workers were engaged in the investigation, most of them are20-29years old(62.67%), and the average age is (24.9±5.2).58.5%of them are the immigrating population from other provinces with often floating living, and others are local registers.43.5%of those workers started the service in Xining, and the others have serviced in different city. In recent months,243respondents who have sex partners,221respondents have stead sex partners, and110respondent’s sex partners have no idea about their work.(2) Female sex workers’cognition on AIDS related behaviors and condom using. Higher awareness about AIDS through sexual transmission and mother to child transmission; which is91.75%and91%.other infection ways or behavior were unknown. People who think they have no possibility of HIV infection, accounting for25.25percent, low possibility of infection by50.25%,21.75%) of the medium infection possibility, only2.75%of them think they have high possibility of infection.87.25%of female sex workers who were investigated believe that condoms can prevent HIV infection from sex;65%of them adhere to use condoms properly each time, so that can be protected from HIV infection;41.5%think that even use condoms, they may also be infected with HIV;90.75%of people agree with that using of condoms could avoid HIV infection;90.5%of people believe that use of condoms is very health. (3) Analysis of female sex workers’related behaviors:so far, there are207people who have never done a comprehensive STDs (51.75%), of which278(69.5%), commercial sexual workers had a reproductive tract infection in a year.66.5%of female sex workers in the last12months suffered from syphilis, gonorrhea, and other types of sexually transmitted diseases, and most of them choose individual physicians (19.42%). The choice of the protection of sexually transmitted diseases, only28.5%choose condoms, vaginal douching accounted for54.75%; choose condoms as their main method of contraception by48.75%. Respondents who have never done the HIV testing accounted for85.25%, in addition to sexually transmitted diseases center of disease control institutions and hospitals, more people (64.34%) choose to do HIV testing and counseling in maternity and children’s health care centers Family planning center. Most of workers’first commercial sex behavior occurred before the age of25(86.75%), sexual behavior as vaginal intercourse (98.25%), only47.50%of respondents always use a condom; customers never rejected to use of condom accounted for only3.75%.(4) Laboratory testing results and syphilis positive influence factors:Collected blood samples of400female sex workers in entertainment places for HIV and RPR testing, was not detected HIV positive, RPR positive18cases (4.5%).Age, no fixity companion, household registration and the use of condoms are influence factors of syphilis positive rate.Conclusion(1) The female sex workers at the place of entertainment in Xining City, who were chartered by low education level, mobility, the age distribution mainly in20years-29years of age, half of them have a fixed partner.(2)Their awareness of the hazards of AIDS was insufficient. Their knowledge and behavior were disjointed. They pay less attention to the risk of AIDS, and the usage of condom in their sexual act is low.(3) Female sex workers have some risk behavior related to reproductive health.
