Purpose: To investigate the oncologic outcome of transurethral resection of theprostate (TURP) as a cytoreductive surgery in metastatic prostate cancer.Materials and methods:122Chinese males with newly diagnosed PCa, whoregistered in our hospital from January2007and February2012, were followed up fora median of15months (11-62months).44males received TURP and maximalandrogen blockade (MAB) as initial systematic therapy for a relief of bladder outletobstruction and other78received MAB alone. All the date had been collected werecompared between the two groups by statistical analysis. Results: Age at diagnosis, preoperative t-PSA, biopsy Gleason score, complication, etc, were comparable between the two groups. Patients who underwent a TURP hadlower PSA nadir (0.870ng/ml vs.1.739ng/ml in average, P=0.030) and had longertime of progression-free survival (PFS)(P<0.001). Disease-specific survival (DSS)and overall survival (OS) in the two groups did not reach statistical significance.Multiple regression analysis showed that only the treatment, the Gleason score and thelevels of preoperative t-PSA in the Serum were independent determinants ofPFS,the age and the Gleason score were independent determinants of DSS, the ageand complication were independent determinants of OS in these patients, respectively. Conclusions: TURP seemed to be effective for hormone therapy in metastaticprostate cancer and resulted in improvements in progression-free survival rate.
