Gastrointestinal symptoms were measured byQuestionnaire of severity and frequency index of symptom. Their current quality of lifewere measured by the disease-specific form included in the questionnaire ofQOL(IBS-QOL) and evaluated by Mann-Whitney Test. As for the QOL of IBS patients,Multiple Correlation Analysis was applied to analyze the relevance between scores ofQOL and scores of gastrointestinal symptoms, Mann-Whitney Test was applied toanalyze the differences between the male and female, between the urban and the ruralareas, Kruskal-Wallis Test was applied to analyze the differences among six grades andfour IBS subtypes.Results1) There were no statistically significant differences between IBS and Non-IBSgroups in aspects of sex, educational level, and distribution according to areas(P>0.05);2) As for the current QOL, IBS patients in middle school got significantly lower scoresthan the controls (Non-IBS) on all subscales and overall score of IBS-QOL(P<0.01);3)The scores of patients on IBS-QOL subscales except Role Emotional (RE) werenegatively associated with symptom frequency, symptom degree and symptom totalscores(P<0.05); The patients had no significant difference among IBS subtypes excepton Mental Health(MH) and Interference with activity(P>0.05);4) The female patientswere significantly poorer QOL than the male patients on the differences in5subscales ofIBS-QOL: Dysphoria, Body image, Interference with activity, Health worry, Foodavoiding, and overall score were also significant(P<0.05); There was no significantdifference of QOL between the urban patients and the rural ones(P>0.05);Conclusion1) As for the current QOL IBS patients in middle school were significantly lower than the controls, Irritable bowel syndrome had a negative impact on QOL ofmiddle school stdudents.2) The QOL of middle school stdudents with IBS were afftectedby the frequency and the degree of IBS symptoms; The patients had no significantdifference of QOL among4IBS subtypes.3) The female patients were significantlypoorer QOL than the male patients,,but no difference between the urban patients and therural ones.4) It is proposed that the health-related departments should provide healtheducation systematically for students, parents and teachers, so that they can understandwhat IBS is and know how to treat it.
