Background and Objective Procalcitonin as a new found of useful sepsismarkers in recent years has recently emerged as a powerful biomarker foran early and accurate diagnosis of bacterial infection,in addition, bloodPCT concentration has been shown to correlate with the severity of thedisease and prognosis of patients. To explore the clinical values of SerumProcalcitonin Level in bacterial pneumonia, this study investigates thelevel of PCT in patients with bacterial pneumonia. Methods Patients with hospital acquired pneumonia whose sputum culturewere positive admitted to be in ZhongShan Hospital XiaMen Universitybetween November2010and September2011were involed. The38patientswith serious bacterial pneumonia as severe group,and46patients withmild bacterial pneumonia as mild group. The two groups determined SerumPCT levels prior administered antimicrobial angents,Moreover, patientswith serious pneumonia were divided into four groups depending ondifferent levels of serum PCT:0.02~0.5ng/ml group,0.5~2.0ng/mlgroup,2.0~10.0ng/ml group and≥10.0ng/ml group. The morbidity ofmultiple organ dysfunction syndrome(MODS),the mortality were analyzed.Results①The mean serum PCT level was7.67±24.65ng/ml in Acinetobacterbaumanniis group,8.00±22.76ng/ml in Pseudomonas aeruginosa group, and3.94±4.11ng/ml in Klebsiella pneumoniae group, but the serum PCT levelswere no significant difference among the three groups((P>0.50)。②Themean serum PCT level was9.57±22.11ng/mL in the severe group (seriousbacterial pneumonia), which was significantly higher than in the mildgroup (mild bacterial pneumonia), which was1.37±3.44ng/ml (P<0.001). ③With increasing PCT levels, the morbidity of multiple organ dysfunctionsyndrome(MODS) increased(P<0.05),and the mortality increased too(P<0.05).Conclusion①Serum Procalcitonin level is associated with the severityof illness in patients with bacterial pneumonia, especially with seriousbacterial pneumonia.②Serum Procalcitonin appears to be a prognosticmarker of morbidity and mortality in patients with bacterial pneumonia, ithas certain clinical value.
