Oil Camillia is one of woody oil crops, which have been planted largely in the southern China for long history. The growth characteristics of shoots and root systems were analyzed comparatively based on4species seedlings,5grafted seedlings with different cultivar scions, grafted seedlings cultivated in container or field, and seedlings after afforestation with bare-rooted seedling or container-grown seedling, respectively. The objective of this article provides the theoretical support for the good-quality production of camillia seedlings. The four species of the Camillia oleifera Abel., Camellia meiocarpa Hu., Camellia semiserrata Chi.. and Camillia yuhsienensis were analyzed and compared. The shoot height and ground diameter of the Camillia oleifera Abel., Camillia oleifera Abel. grow faster than those of the Camellia semiserrata Chi. and Camillia yuhsienensis. The root-shoot ratio among the four Camillias decreases with age, which implies that the root systems grows slowly than shoots. Based on the root total length and total surface area, the root systems of Camillia oleifera Abel. and Camellia meiocarpa Hu. grow faster, which show they can be superior to for potential grafting stock.Five-cultivar scions of Camillia oleifera Abel. grafted at the same stock showed that the significant difference existed in the grafted seedlings in both aboveground part and underground part (including seedling height, ground diameter, biomass, total root length, total root surface, the root length and surface of different diameter-sized) after11-month growth. Seedling height ranges from13.8cm of Changlin53to17.5cm of Changlin4, ground diameter from2.95mm of Changlin53to3.45mm of Changlin4, shoot biomass from2.85g/plant of Changlin27to3.7g/plant of Changlin4, root biomass from2.09g/plant of Changlin40to2.69g/plant of Changlin23and2.67g/plant of Changlin4, total length of root system from143.4cm of Changlin53to243.3 cm of Changlin4, total root surface area from31.86cm2of Changlin53to50.19cm2of Changlin4, and root volume0.578cm3of Changlin53to0.843cm3of Changlin4. All above imply that the scion genetic attributes to the growth of grafted seedlings, and Changlin4is superior to Changlin53remarkably.8-months’observation showed that the growth of aerial parts and root of the Camillia oleifera seedlings were not entirely in sync, during the time of low temperature from November to February, the root system still in sustained growth though the aerial parts of the5cultivars grew slowly.Compared with the container seedlings and field seedlings, there is no significant difference with shoot height and biomass. However, the ground diameter with container seedlings is larger than that of field seedlings, and total root length (especially that of0.5<d<1.0root) and root surface area (including total root and d<2.0root) lower than that of field seedlings. The shoots and root systems were investigated after artificial afforestation with bare-rooted seedling and container-grown seedling. The differences of shoot height, ground diameter and shoot biomass are no significant at earlier stage, and the container-grown seedlings grows rapidly and the differences enlarge gradually while growth-time lasts. The root biomass and total root length of container-grown seedling are larger than that of bare-rooted seedling, but not significant at earlier stage. The root of0.0<d<0.5accounts for the most of the total root length and the0.0<d<0.5root length of container-grown seedling is larger than that of bare-rooted seedling. The total root surfaces of both container-grown seedling and bare-rooted seedling grows slowly between May and July, rapidly between July and September, and then slowly after September. The0.0<d<0.5root surface of container-grown seedling is larger than that of bare-rooted seedling,0.5<d<2.0root surfaces have no difference between two afforestation seeding, while the d>2.0root surfaces is opposite to0.0<d≤0.5.
