| Feather meal is an economical protein ingredient, and the main protein in feather is Keratin. Due to the higher degree of cross-linking by disulfide bridges, hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions, keratin is insoluble and poorly susceptible to digestion by animal, and also is hard to be used in industrial. With the development of aquaculture in China, a large number of feathers was produced, most of which was made as animal feed after dispose of chemical degradation. Even worse, lots of it was throw away as waste, which was not only waste resource but also pollute environment. At the same time, the rapid development of animal husbandry and amino acids requires a lot of protein. Then degradate feather into soluble protein and amino acids by some way, not only can provide protein to industry but salo can prrotein our environment. Irradiation is a green processing technology, which has many advantages,such as less heat, low energy consumption, pollution-free, and convenient. It was wide used in food preservation, sterilization, and polymer degradation.This study was aiming to improve the use of feather, using y ray irradiation to degradate feather.From the following five aspects to explore the way to improve the utilization of feather.1. The effect of irradiation to featherBy measuring the true protein in feather after irradiated by100kGy,200kGy,300kGy400kGy,500kGy,600kGy dose irradiation and the feather not irradiated, got the result that there was no significantly different(P>0.05) between the feather irradiated after y ray irradiation and the feather not irradiated in true protein. That means irradiation would not destroy the true protein in feather greatly.Weighting5g feather, using0kGy,100kGy,200kGy,300kGy400kGy,500kGy,600kGy doses of y ray to irradiate feather, and then wash the feather with distilled water, after that, weighting the remainning weight of the feather. Comparing the weight of the feather before dispose and after dispose, got the result that irradiation can degradate feather and the degradation of feather increase as the irradiation dose increase.2.The complex dispose of feather by Y irradiation and sulfuric acidUsing100kGy dose irradiation to irradiate the feather, and then degradate it with different concentration sulfuric acid, different solid liquid ratio, different temperature, and different time. The result is that the best degradate condition is the feather irradiated by100kGy dose of y ray irradiation, the concentration of sulfuric acid is6mol/L, the solid liquid ratio is1:2.5, the temperature is110℃, and the degradate time is10h.3. The complex dispose of feather by γ irradiation and alkaliUsing100kGy dose irradiation to irradiate the feather, and then degradate it with different concentration alkali. different solid liquid ratio. different temperature. and different time. The result is that the best degradate condition is the feather irradiated by100kGy dose of γ ray irradiation. the concentration of alkali is0.5%. the solid liquid ratio is1:15. the temperature is80℃. and the degradate time is2h.4The complex dispose of feather by γ irradiation and pepsinUsing100kGy dose irradiation to irradiate the feather, and then degradate it with different concentration of pepsin, different buffer, different pH, different temperature, and different time.
