Carex is the largest genera in Cyperaceae. More than2000species were recorded all over the world and most of them were found in North America and East Asia that belonged to the northern temperate zone. More than500species were recorded in China. Carex L. is one of the main big genera in Chinese floristic composition and they are always used as grass plants, but some kinds of them are expected to be also fine turf grass. If they can be developed and utilized scientifically, they tend to be one of the most favorable candidates of landscape plants. This article is in view of the domestic grass resource utilization currently and reviews the current situation of domestic and foreign Carex species in order to precede a more comprehensive survey of Carex resources in Qinling area, through the introduction and turf value evaluation Carex species with high application value are expected to be selected. Moreover, as the quickening pace of urban greening beautification, vegetation with high shade-tolerance is needed for understory plants and the shaded aspects of high buildings to adapt to shading environment. However, researches of groundcover plants at home and abroad focus mainly on resistance of physiology, form performance and the selection of plants with higher shade-tolerance ability. Hence, survey of Carex species resource and turf evaluation is conducted to select Carex species with higher adaptability and landscaping character. The main results are as follows.1. Carex species resources are abundant in Qinling area. Survey and investigation in Qinling area showed that there are about60Carex species in this region. At present, they are limited to some traditional types. According to our field work, there are only6species that under application in landscaping and beatification.2. According to the field survey of Qinling area in Shanxi province, we investigated that there are40Carex species and we introduced20species in sensu the relevant information in order to do the turf evaluation experiment. As a conclusion, we can find that C. sclerocarpa Franch, C. brevriculmis R.Br, C.ascocetra C.B.Charke and C. nubigena have a higher value in turf evaluation and are able to be utilized as turf material.3. The changes of growth characters and photosynthetic characteristics of ten Carex species were studied with four different shading treatments(0%,50%,75%,90%sun-shading)for comparing their shade-tolerance and evaluation indices. The result demonstrated that:C. Giraldiana, C. kansuensis and C.brevriculmis achived a higher shade-tolerance compared with other species; C.pediformis, C.ascocetra, C.japonica and C. Duriuscula are belonged to half-shade plants; C. Huashanica, C. Nubigena and C. shaanxiensis owned a lower ability of shade-tolerance.4. The shade-tolerance consolidated sequence of ten Carex species was as follows:C. kansuensis>C. Giraldiana>C.brevriculmis>C.japonica>C.ascocetra>C. Duriuscula>C.pediformis>C. Huashanica>C. Nubigena> C. Shaanxiensis, and this conclusion Was basically consistent with the visual observations. Therefore, the result presented here Provided an foundation for further investigation of shade-tolerance of Carex species.According our survey and invetigation, Qinling area hold the abundant Carex resource, but the turf grass research is not fully developed especially in Carex. This research focus mainly on the evaluation in one year, but perennial material needs at least3-5years of observation and measurement in order to evaluate accurately. In the following step, promotion and further study are needed so as to select more landscaping vegetation with high adaptability of the local climate characteristics and higher varieties of lawn grass.
