BRT is a public system of bus rapid transport between urban rail transport and bus transport which started in Curitiba in Brazil in1970s and rose in the mid-to late1990s. There have been many successful examples on the application of BRT in the foreign countries. The cost of BRT is much lower than that of the light rail, but the transport capacity of it is much better than the general public transport systems. The rail transit finds it difficult to play an important role on the public transport systems, because of its great investment, long construction cycle and low capacity of forming a certain transport network in a short time. As more and more projects of BRT system are built up in the foreign countries successively, many domestic cities begin their planning and construction of BRT attempting to achieve better development of BRT to relieve the traffic jams in the cities effectively.Starting from an elaboration on the contradiction between supply and demand of urban transit, this paper makes a deep, comprehensive and systematic description on the research status of rapid transit at home and abroad including the comparison between the formulation and implementation of relevant policies as well as the difference of research directions about the rapid transit to fix a non-profit position for the public transit of cities. Then this paper makes it clear to solve the problem of traffic jams. In addition to speeding up the construction of transport facilities, the government should bring in various urban transport products. And based on the above illustration, this paper also collects the first-hand empirical data of the implementation of BRT in Chengdu by field investigation to conduct a systematic analysis on the urban structure and traffic situation in Chengdu and present six main existing problems of the urban transit in the city. Besides, corresponding countermeasures to make sure the effective implementation of BRT in Chengdu are put forward after the necessity and feasibility of building up the system are analyzed comprehensively. Finally, it proposes what kinds of efforts Chengdu city will make in terms of the development of BRT while implementing the strategy of "transit comes first".
