Based on the computer technology, electronic information technology has broadly used on board ship. Usually ship communication, electronic navigation and cargo allotment have already adopted this technology. The computer control technology has been applied in electronic speed governor, engine monitor and alarm system, cooling medium temperature control system etc. The cam mechanism is used for controlling fuel injection and combustion, exhaust emission etc in conventional diesel engines. But this control mode cannot apply in all the working conditions of the diesel engine, those engines cannot meet the requirements of lower fuel consumption and less emission of harmful exhaust gas. In this situation, intelligent engine emerges as the times require. For intelligent engine, computer is used to replace the traditional cam for control fuel oil injection, exhaust valve action, cylinder lubrication etc. The control actions can be flexible adjusted to different modes according to different kinds of working conditions. In order to improve its reliability, expert system is introduced for intelligent engine. Now intelligent engine has been widely installed on board ships, and as the main engine, intelligent engine showed the tendency to replace the conventional engine. The article mainly talks about the control and management systems for intelligent engine.Firstly, the hardware which means the structure of the intelligent engine is studied. Compared with the main components of mechanical controlled engines and intelligent engine, analyzed its working principles according to engine control modes, and explained the advantages of the intelligent engine. Analyzed the structure of WARTSILA RT-Flex series engine and MAN B&W ME series engine, compared them with the corresponding traditional engine, and fully discussed the technology breakthrough in intelligent engine structure. Analyzed the improvement of cylinder lubrication for intelligent engine, and discussed the great influence on engine characters.Secondly, the software which means the engine management system is studied. Analyzed the human factor which may influence on the management of intelligent engine, studied the new management system of intelligent engine. Discussed the component and working principle of newly designed management system. Compared intelligent engine’s management system with traditional system, and summarized the advantages of new system. Finally, with regard to the analysis results of hardware and software of intelligent engine, discussed the shortages and deficiencies in structure and control system of intelligent engine. Advanced resolve plans for the deficiencies according to the development rule of intelligent engine. Put forward the improvement advises for the shortages according to management experience of diesel engine.
