As the national famous city for coal, Datong has transported a great deal of high quality coal tomany cities since the founding of The People’s Republic of China. And it has made a significantcontribution to the national economic and social development. Just like many resource-based citiesin China, Datong has always taken the production and development of coal industry as the primarytask of the city for a long time, but this “Mr. postpartum life”model did not really improve qualityof life of coal miners, especially in the housing field of residents there. In the traditional miningarea, some miners are still living in a poor condition, worn shack, which not only affects the livingstandards of the miners’ families but also has a negative impact on the development of Datong city.With guidance of shantytown renovation policies made by central and provincial governments,Datong municipal government, combined with the actual situation of mining shantytown, hasdeveloped a variety of supporting policies and measures to actively promote the transformation ofmining shanty town. After six years of development, Datong mining shantytowns project has madegreat progress, but also revealed many problems. Study on Datong mining shantytowns project hascertain reference significance to the shantytowns renovation project of the traditionalresource-based city like Datong. This paper will not only focus on the formation of Datong miningshantytown, current situation and achievement gotten these years, but also analyze the existingproblems and reasons for it. At the same time, the researcher will select Hengan New District whichis the largest mining shantytown in Datong as a case to have the related investigation and analysis.On the basis of that, the researcher would give some suggestions to reconstruction of miningshantytowns in china and hope that it would have certain reference significance to shantytownproject.
