The Utopia, the Garden city and the glorious city have been relentless pursuit of the idealcity by the human. However, the traditional theory hopes that shaping the meaningful city bybuilding, is not very successful through the historical evidence. The city in the rapidurbanization and globalization force, faces with more complex contradictions and conflicts,and have the increasing demands of ecological security, economic development, culturalheritage and creativity, and social equity value urgent. The limitations of the existing theoryof architecture and urban planning is becoming increasingly apparent because of its era. Theend of the20th century, landscape urbanism gradually formed, It emphasized more attentionon site characterization, process, program and uncertainty, which are generally considered tofit with the characteristics of the contemporary city.Since the rise of landscape urbanism, its advocates, such as, Mostafvi, Corner andWaldheim, have done publish a lot of papers. But so far it is still in discussion in manyaspects. In China, most of the studies are excerpts of foreign literature or the special studieson one aspect of landscape urbanism, without the system research on its development andevolution. The paper attempts to systematically study on the budding, rising and evolution ofthe landscape urbanism, and then analyze its availability combined with the actual situationin China.Firstly, this paper elaborates the background, theory and practice of landscape urbanism,which was inherited, developed and changed from the urban planning, architecture,landscape planning and design, according to the time sequence. Secondly, this paper focuson the analysis of value systems and different practice cases of landscape urbanism,combined with literature research, summarizes the five design principles(IncrementalDevelopment, Organization of Territory, Layering of Infrastructure, Definition of Boundaries,Creation of Public Space), Four design strategies(Machinic Landscape, Field Operations,Ecological Infrastructure, Green Urban Design), and four specific design practices(Mapping,Architecture as Landscape, Infrastructure as Landscape, Productive Landscape). Thirdly, thispaper remarks the status of landscape urbanism in china, basing on the research and analysison practice of landscape urbanism in China. At last, this paper assesses the status, theory,value system and methodologies, and make recommendations about its future development.
