The study on steering maneuver comfort is of great significance in studies ofhuman machine interface for car driver cabin, design of power steering system andcomfort evaluation in computer aided automotive ergonomics. However, the currentresearches in steering comfort are limited to joint angle and joint torque of humanbody without regarding biomechanical characteristics of human movements. To solvethis problem, financially supported by the Nature Science Fund(No.51005133), theresearch work has been done in this dissertation includes the following aspects:1.A multi-adjustable experiental platform used for driver steering maneuver wasset up, which can not only simulate vehicle environment, but also can measurebiomechanical parameters during human motions.2.Posture comfort on steering maneuver was analysed. Firstly, vector method ofobtaining joint angles from3-D position data of reflective makers placed on thedominant limbs was proposed. Then comfortable driving posture for Chinese wascalculated and compared with the postural angles in the past researches. Therelationships between drivers’anthropometric measurements, comfortable posturalangles and comfortable positons were investigated.3.Spatial trajectories and spatial angles of the upper limb during steeringmovements were analysed. It showed that there were kinematic couplingcharacteristics between them, which will be of great value in motion prediction duringsteering maneuver. A dynamic model of human upper limb based on Kane methodwas established for dynamic calculation. Joint torques of the limb were calculated andstudied under different driving positions.4.Twelve kinds of movement quality evaluation indices based on kinematics anddynamics were defined, which provided a scientific and objective evaluation methodfor the description and evaluation of human motion. The evaluation indices were usedto evaluate and to study the movement quality of steering.motion As a result, distance,power, smoothness, joint displacement and joint work indices were reasonable in evaluating and analyzing driver steering maneuver movements, which in accord withthe subjective discomfort evaluation. The results revealed that these indices can beused as steering comfort evaluation indices.The results of the investigation not only provided the method and clue forobjective evaluation of steering comfort, but also provided valid reference toautomotive ergonomics design.
