In recent years, with the rapid economic development, daily increasing urbanization and the explosive growth of the number of motor vehicles of China, in the business districts of many cities, the problems of traffic congestion, the conflict between vehicles and pedestrains and the contradiction between business vitality and urban landscape become more and more serious. To build air walk corridors on the basis of the existing pedestrian bridges is a good way to solve the real problem, and also a good way to maintain and improve the urban vitality and the quality of environment and urban public spaces.Compared with the relatively mature system of air walk and the air pedestrian facilities whose function is single, to develop the air walk corridors in the business districts of the big cities is the best urban design strategy under the condition of absorbing the advanced planning idea and implementary expirence. Firstly, starting from a broader perspective, this thesis will make a relevant elaboration of the urban public space which the air walk corridors belong to, and systemly comb the involved content on the basis of the theories of environmental psychology and road and traffic plannings. And combined with the theoretical foundation above, and learnning from the successful cases at home and abroad, this thesis will conclude and analysis the various characteristics of the air walk pedestrian corridor system, and refine an inspiration which could be an exemple that is good for the development of the air walk corridor in China. And then, take the air pedestrian facilities and air walk corridors in the business districts in the cities of Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing, Hangzhou, Nanning, Mianyang, Xi’an and Yinchuan as the main research targets.; and the air walk facilities in the business districts of the cities of Harbin, Shenzhen and Guiyang as assist research objects.Through the scientific methods of real locations shoots、spot counting、questionnaires and personal interviews, this thesis has accumulated a large number of real and effective first-hand information, and selected the objects which are most probable to associate with the building enviomment around in the completed air walk facilities. And according to the existed problems, this thesis will put forward a optimiazed designing scheme and then, from several aspects, come up with some related programming and planning suggestions. The first chapter is the introduction which introduces the background and significance of the research and the research status at home and aboard; in the second chapter, there is a review of the theories of the urban public space, environmental psychology, roads and transport planning and urban design which are related to the air pedestrian corridor; The third chapter is a detailed introduction and analysis of Calgary,Minneapolis, and Hong Kong which are relatively successful examples of the air pedestrian corridor system; Chapter Four will make a statistical processing and a concluding analysis of the results of the field research and data research. On basis of the research analysis in the forth chapter; Chapter Five will combine the relative theoretical data and the researchs of the examples, and select a few cities which are feasible to be the objects of the transform planning shceme, and unite the objective status to make a few suitable planning and design strategies for the air pedestrian corridors in the business districts of domestic cities.
