With the constant development of the highway network, the road roughness get more and more attention. With good roughness, the road will provide people with security, comfort and good economic benefits of traveling environment. At the same time, it will also reduce the vibration of the vehicle and enhance the durability of the road. Therefore, the study of road roughness will get a wide range of theoretical and practical significance. The United States is a country whose road construction started early, developed fast and the highway network is the most robust. Doing research on roughness in the United States, has a very large reference. At first, we use the road general purpose evaluation-International Roughness Index to compare the pavement elevation data between the two countries in this paper. Then, we use wavelet analysis which is superior to fourier analysis to discuss deeper. The main content of the paper consists of the following chapters:Chapter1:This chapter mainly narratives the purpose and significance of this paper, as well as the development of the case of both at home and abroad in details;Chapter2:Starting from the definition of road roughness, this chapter introduces general evaluation of road roughness-International Roughness Index. Next, this chapter provides us with IRI’s background, basic concepts, and calculation model etc;Chapter3:The data of road roughness in the United States and China are obtained by QY-Z1Dual-track real-Road-meter. And it calculate IRI from a kind of programming software. At last, this chapter compares the United States and China with IRI distribution histogram.Chapter4:This chapter mainly narratives the definition of wavelet analysis and makes a brief introduction of the discrete dyadic wavelet transform in engineering. Then, it compares wavelet analysis and fourier analysis.Chapter5:According to the data from chapter3, we extract four roads from different regions in China and the United States and draw the road elevation waveform. Then, we analysis each two road with wavelet analysis from the two countries. For each wavelet spectrum,we have spectral analysis. And,we get conclusions with reasonable wavelength when we are constructing roads.Chapter6:Conclusion and outlook.
